Cory Brothers Shipping Agency has been a trusted supply chain partner for businesses for over 180 years and has significant international presence with offices in key locations around the world.

We are currently seeking a Trainee Ships Agent to join our busy team in Basildon. This is a great opportunity for someone who is looking for a career in the exciting world of shipping.

No previous experience necessary, however, we do require the successful applicant to be highly motivated, enthusiastic, committed and driven, with a full, clean driving licence and the ability to work independently as well as part of a team.

You will be responsible for preparing and setting up vessels in accordance with Quality Assurance requirements and utilistaion of in-house agency system, executing any tasks according to lawful and ethical standards in line with company procedures and guidelines.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Attend to vessel boarding and visiting as required throughout ports in East Anglia, coordinating vessels calls and preparing and completing relevant shipping documentation as appropriate
  • Communicating with principals, harbour authorities, service companies and other associated parties in a timely manner to meet requirements given
  • Advise local Customs, Immigration office and other relevant agencies/officials of vessels arrival and crew transfers
  • Liaise with ships Captains for arrival, sailing information and gather all relevant documentation
  • To provide out of hours office cover with other members of the team on a rota basis (boarding and phone duties) to include bank holidays, weekends and night working

About You

  • Minimum GCSE in Mathematics and English Grade C (or equivalent)
  • Ability to communicate effectively with people at all levels, both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to deliver excellent client focused service
  • Organisational skills with the ability to prioritise, work well under pressure, meet tight deadlines and maintain focus
  • Ability to maintain accurate manual and electronic records and filing systems
  • Problem solving skills and the ability to identify and resolve issues in a timely manner
  • Accuracy and attention to detail with the ability to seek ways to improve and promote quality
  • IT literacy including knowledge of MS Word/Excel/Outlook
  • Team worker with the ability to work collaboratively and able to use own initiative
  • Able to work outside office hours
  • Ability to travel within the UK - full, clean driving licence

This role is Monday to Friday but there will be a requirement to cover nights, weekends and bank holidays as part of a rota. There will be occasions of lone working.
